Smart and sustainable: hangers returned via NE DistriService

In collaboration with Curtain atelier Van der Lelie (established in 1956), NE DistriService set up a smart and sustainable process around eight years ago: the hanger return service. The idea is simple yet powerful. Customers return their empty curtain hangers free of charge, and these are then reused. Less waste, more cost savings - and two trees are planted for every full box. So far, over 28,000 trees have been planted thanks to this initiative. A true win-win. But how does it work exactly? Sjoerd van der Lelie, co-initiator, explains.

How it started: a practical solution for a growing problem

“The need came from our customers, the retailers,” says Sjoerd. “They didn’t want to throw the hangers away and expected us to provide a solution. That gave us the motivation to launch the Hanger Return Box in partnership with NE DistriService. Their drivers can easily take the boxes back.”

A simple and effective system: empty hanger boxes are returned after a scheduled delivery without causing any extra hassle for the customer. The system works for direct customers of Curtain Atelier Van der Lelie as well as customers of fabric suppliers for whom they handle production. For all customers, this service is completely free of charge.

How does it work in practice?

On average, a store uses the hanger return service once a month. NE DistriService drivers always have empty boxes in their trucks. “We’ve never had a single complaint about boxes not being available,” Sjoerd says with satisfaction. “The process runs smoothly.”

It’s not only practical but also environmentally friendly. For every returned box, two trees are planted, contributing to the sustainable image of Curtain Atelier Van der Lelie.

The benefits at a glance

Why is this service so successful? Simply because it combines sustainability, convenience, and cost savings.

  1. Two trees per full box: For every box with 50 returned hangers, Curtain Atelier Van der Lelie have two trees planted.
  2. Cost-free and practical: Customers don’t pay for this service and benefit from a straightforward process that integrates seamlessly with their existing logistics.
  3. No extra trips: Since the hanger boxes travel back during regular deliveries and pickups, there’s no additional environmental burden.
  4. Reusable hangers: Hangers aren’t discarded but are given a second life – good for the planet and the wallet.
Small steps, big impact

According to Sjoerd, the strength of the hanger return service lies in its simplicity. “It’s not a complicated system, but it works. It’s good for the environment, and it shows that we as a company are environmentally conscious. Our customers appreciate that immensely.”

There is, however, limited room for further impact. “To make a real ecological difference, we would need to expand our efforts, which requires a broader plan.” (Curtain atelier Van der Lelie also has production in Romania, where they recycle textiles and have traditionally supported orphanages.) Reports on returned hangers and planted trees? “Nice, but not compelling enough for today’s customer.”
